A police force for all Australians

A police force for all Australians

The Australian Federal Police is committed to developing a workforce that reflects all elements of the communities we serve.

Diversity is a core element of modern policing. Diverse work teams have a broader base of experience and thinking to draw upon when looking to effectively respond to local, national and international challenges, and are necessary for innovation, creativity and growth.

Our organisational culture

  • The AFP is an ethical and values-driven agency that embraces diversity and inclusion.
  • The AFP is committed to embedding inclusive practices into AFP's organisational culture.
  • The AFP’s organisational culture is focused on ensuring employees feel safe, connected and respected.
  • The AFP is dedicated to making meaningful, real and sustainable change across the organisation.
  • The AFP values of fairness, trust, respect, accountability, integrity, commitment and excellence in service to the community are at the core of all activities.

Women in the AFP

Women in the AFP

Police work has traditionally been seen as male-dominated and the AFP is working to change that. Currently, 38.6 per cent of our entire workforce are women, while the proportion of women in senior executive roles increased from 27.2 per cent in 2016 to 41.9 per cent in 2021.

Women-focused initiatives

National Women's Advisory Network

The AFP’s National Women’s Advisory Network (NWAN) has been in place for over 10 years. Featuring representatives from each AFP office in Australia, it was initially established to provide networking opportunities.

Today, the NWAN provides an open and supportive environment for members to discuss issues or to raise them directly to the AFP Diversity Council. Membership of this inclusive group is not limited to women.

Australasian Council of Women and Policing (ACWAP)

An external program, ACWAP's goal is to improve the opportunities and outcomes for women within policing at a global level. The AFP chaired the 21st Council in Canberra in 2019.
