What is the role?
An exciting opportunity is available for a solutions-focused and motivated individual to apply their accounting skills and experience in the AFP’s Finance Team in the Intelligence and Covert Services Command.
The Team provides financial services and support to operational areas in the AFP.
As a Band 6 Accountant you will play a key role in providing finance support and advice to AFP operational teams and build relationships with those stakeholders. You will also maintain robust financial records, apply problem-solving skills, and work in a team to achieve team outcomes in line with the AFP’s objectives.
As a Team Member in the AFP you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
- Provide a wide range of financial support services and advice to operational areas and other stakeholders.
- Maintain robust and timely financial records, with strong attention to detail.
- Assist in the production of Special Purpose Financial Statements.
- Assist in the development of junior staff and provide support to the Team Leader.

Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Tertiary qualifications in accounting, finance or related field.
- Hold a current Australian Driver Licence.
- Has contemporary accounting knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including strong attention to detail.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Membership of, or studying towards, Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand or CPA Australia is highly desirable.
- Bookkeeping skills and experience are desirable.
Additional Information
- This is predominantly an in-office role based in Canberra, with limited working from home opportunities. Successful applicants are expected to be based in Canberra.
