The Criminal Records branch is a unique part of the Australian Federal Police. The branch consists of two highly collaborative areas, National Police Checks and the Response and Data Integrity team. There are four key roles across the two teams and as a Band 3 team member it is anticipated that you will gain experience in all of them. The teams function contribute to keeping Australia safe, it provides the National Police Checking service as well as providing criminal history information to policing jurisdictions and other Government and prosecuting agencies. A key component to the area is ensuring the integrity of the data which is utilised by the Response and National Police Checking teams.
This role provides high level support to the team and delivers services to legally entitled entities, including AFP appointees, members of the public, other police services, Government and private clients and Government regulatory agencies.
In this role you will be conducting tasks in support of the team goals, processing workloads and collaborating with team members on current priorities, learn to provide guidance and advice on the application of legislation, including spent conviction legislation where relevant, in determining the retention and release of AFP records and holdings of various purposes. You will also be expected to assist senior team members in projects where appropriate and challenge yourself to continue to develop the skills required for the area.
You will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?
In this role you will undertake a range of operational support and clerical administrative duties, including any or all of the following activities:
- Create/update/maintain information in AFP systems;
- Assist with projects;
- Maintain a proactive working environment
- Respond to requests for information from legally entitled persons and/or agencies;
- Maintain client/stakeholder relationships;
- Processing high volumes of work;
- Undertake all duties related to the AFP’s National Police Checking Service;
- Once qualified, training and guiding other staff in the performance of any of the above functions.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Has the ability to learn or relevant experience working with legislation or guidelines.
- Has experience working in high volume processing roles.
Additional Information
- This role is located in Canberra and applicants are expected to be based in ACT or surround area. Working from home will not be offered during the probation period – 6 months from start date.
- This role is an AFP Band 3 level
