What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Developer Programmer within the Specialist Capability Systems (SCS) Section within the Technology Operations & Chief Information Officer (CIO) Command. The Command is a trusted frontline partner that enables policing through problem solving and technical expertise and excellence. The CIO Command provides corporate application, ICT end to end solutions, advice, cyber security and infrastructure that underpin AFP activities. The CIO Command aims to be a highly collaborative, innovative, reliable and trusted enabler for all Commands across the AFP. The products and services delivered are user focused, secure and fit for purpose, while supported by a highly skilled, agile and resilient workforce.

As a Developer Programmer you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of digital applications that support the agency’s objectives. You will apply your technical expertise to deliver reliable and efficient software solutions and play an active role in improving development practices and outcomes. You will be required to contribute to delivering high-quality digital solutions that improve services, support users, and achieve organisation outcomes.

You will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and AFP Governance Instruments. The successful applicant is expected to deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

In this role you will:

  • Develop, test, and maintain high-quality software applications in line with organisational requirements.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
  • Assist in troubleshooting, debugging, and upgrading existing applications.
  • Apply secure coding practices and contribute to risk management activities.
  • Collaborate with analysts, testers, project managers, and business stakeholders.
  • Support system integration and ensure interoperability across applications.
  • Contribute to the improvement of development standards, processes, and tools.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and user guidance to support sustainability.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies and apply best practices in software development.

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance, or the ability to obtain one.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with application and software development technologies and best practice coding standards
  • Relevant qualifications in Software Development, Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience with full-stack development in a range of technologies (JavaScript, REST, SQL Server, , .Net, Integration or JSON).
  • Show experience with software development practices (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of databases, APIs, and system integration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience with modern frontend or backend frameworks (e.g.,).
  • Experience with automated testing, test-driven development, or behaviour-driven development.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and version control systems (e.g., Git, GitHub, GitLab).
  • Relevant professional certifications
  • Experience in peer code reviews or contributing to team process improvements.
