About the work environment
The CIO Command provides corporate applications, end-to-end ICT solutions, advice, cyber security and infrastructure that underpins AFP activities. The CIO Command aims to be a highly collaborative, innovative, reliable and trusted enabler for all Commands across the AFP.
The Technology Strategy and Data branch is seeking a leader with an enterprise mindset combined with geospatial subject matter awareness to lead the enterprise geospatial capability within the AFP. This will include the strategic initiatives, technological innovation, mentorship and development of the Enterprise Geospatial team and capability across the agency. This role is pivotal in supporting the shaping of the future of our environment, aligning technology strategy with business goals, ensuring performance, security, and scalability across our systems.
The AFP’s Enterprise Geospatial Team is at the forefront of advancing the agency’s geospatial capabilities, modernising systems and enhancing access to tailored geospatial solutions. By leveraging location information, the team enables the next generation of insights and intelligence. This supports the AFP to address evolving threats to Australia, within the realms of law enforcement and national security.
About the role
As the Senior Team Leader Enterprise Geospatial, you will lead delivery of geospatial capabilities that support strategic and operational decision-making across the AFP. You will work closely with other GIS subject matter experts, enable and mentor GIS professionals to ensure outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and AFP Governance Instruments.
You will guide the development of GIS professionals within the Enterprise Geospatial team and support adoption and use of the AFP’s Enterprise Geospatial capability. This includes integration of spatial data and GIS platforms with AFP business areas and systems and ensure alignment with AFP’s strategic goals.
The ideal candidate will possess a balanced blend of technical awareness, strategic acumen, technology delivery of geospatial systems uses and the ability to navigate enterprise level issues and develop high quality GIS solutions.
This position is in Canberra and applicants are expected to be based in Canberra.
What will you do?
As the Senior Team Leader Enterprise Geospatial, be responsible for the development, evolution and maintenance of the AFP’s Enterprise Geospatial capability and platforms to support the agency to meet current and future challenges. Key Responsibilities will be:
- Lead the Enterprise Geospatial Team to support the organisations objectives.
- Develop and productionise analytical products to enable business area use.
- Ensure the quality and accuracy of geospatial data to enable spatial data-driven insights and decision making.
- Collaborate with other teams to integrate geospatial data into their workflows, systems and projects.
- Lead the growth of the enterprise geospatial capability, including through adoption activities, strategic stakeholder engagement and leading communities of practice.
- Allocate and prioritise workloads to enable the Enterprise Geospatial Team to meet organisational needs.
- Implement and evolve the enterprise geospatial strategic initiatives, including technology and capability roadmaps through consideration of key stakeholder requirements, IT architecture policies, standards and guidelines.
- Align effort to meet broader strategy and capability roadmaps ensuring that the AFP’s geospatial environment is fit-for-purpose and complements other systems and capabilities.
- Identify relevant technology innovations and engage with stakeholders and partners to develop suitable implementation strategies.
- Support and promote geospatial excellence and literacy across the organisation.

Essential Requirements
• You must be an Australian Citizen.
• Have the ability to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance.
• Knowledge of the ESRI ArcGIS Suite of tools, including Pro and Enterprise and how they can be used to support a breadth of staff spatial literacy and knowledge to the scale of the AFP.
• Demonstratable awareness of government procurement practices and contract management experience.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with a proven ability to negotiate and influence others.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• 3+ years in geospatial or technical leadership role.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
• Tertiary qualification or industry certification in relevant Geographic Information Systems, such as ESRI and FME or computer science, software development, or similar.
• Ability to lead geospatial professionals, including in front and backend development and infrastructure and integration professionals.
• Understanding of geospatial workflows, including use of task prioritization and work collaboration platforms (e.g. Azure DevOps, MS Suite, Service Now)
• Proficiency in geospatial data analysis and management.
• Experience in geospatial data integration and application development.
• Minimum 5+ years' experience working within a commonwealth government
