What is the role?
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) Command is a trusted frontline partner that enables policing through problem solving and technical expertise and excellence. The CIO Command provides corporate application, ICT end to end solutions, advice, cyber security and infrastructure that underpin AFP activities. The CIO Command aims to be a highly collaborative, innovative, reliable and trusted enabler across the AFP. The products and services delivered are user focused, secure and fit for purpose, while supported by a highly skilled, agile and resilient workforce. Within the CIO Command, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) branch currently has a vacancy for TSF2 Linux Engineer Lead, residing in the Cloud and Infrastructure Section.
The Cloud and Infrastructure Section provides delivery and support of cloud capabilities that directly foster collaboration across the organisation, delivering cloud-based solutions for operational and business outcomes. This includes supporting and administering virtualisation technologies across the organisation’s hybrid cloud environment. The section is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the AFP server and application infrastructure in support of is corporate and operational needs. The section is a multi-disciplinary focused on delivering business value and continuous improvement by leveraging innovative cloud-based solutions.
Job opportunities will be available Australia wide; however, some travel may be required for this role. Successful applicants will be able to work from the closest AFP headquarters in their respective state/territory and will report into management located in Canberra.
As a Technical Specialist in the AFP you will ensure the achievement of outcomes are in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
Technical Specialists provide expert consultancy within their area of expertise to develop and promote technical solutions which support the business requirements of the AFP. A Technical Specialist role does not hold any leadership or financial delegations.
What will you do?
As a Linux Engineer you will provide subject matter expertise in the development, implementation, and management of all Linux platforms. This includes SOE development and deployment focusing on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and its deployment platforms Satellite, OpenShift, etc. as well as infrastructure management across a diverse range of networks and operational scenarios. Engineers should also be well versed in the development, deployment and management of SOE images based on ISM/ASD recommendations.
Contribute as a subject matter technical specialist lead by:
- Provide expertise and technical leadership in the design and implementation and development of roadmaps across Private and Public Cloud platforms
- Manage, patch, upgrade, and support of all Linux platforms.
- Collaborate with internal teams and vendors to assess and implement infrastructure improvements.
- Participate in incident response and problem management activities.
- Mentor junior engineers, promoting technical growth and development.
- Ensure solutions align with business continuity requirements.
- Maintain skills and participate in relevant professional development.
- Support formal change management processes, including occasional after-hours work
- Monitor performance, maintain, and secure the platform, applying fixes/patches and updates as required.
- Troubleshoot and fix platform incidents/deployment issues, identifying root cause, and developing documentation to assist with improving the platform/processes.
- Research and identify opportunities/improvements that can be made to enhance platform capability.
- Develop policies and procedures, create detailed technical documentation for team use and knowledge transfer (build/configuration documents, operational handovers, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Provide systems deployment, configuration, installation and support of equipment in Private and Public Cloud platforms.
- Identify and provide support to other teams across the AFP in-regards to adoption of cloud-based services and best practice in relation platform management.
- Ensure implementation supports future delivery of Platform as-a-Service and Software as-a-Service.
In addition to their primary accountabilities, these roles will cultivate technical excellence across Chief Technology Officer branch and will offer guidance and support to foster skills enhancement and professional growth for staff within the branch.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Relevant qualification or extensive experience and knowledge in area of expertise.
- Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Linux administration.
- Proven ability to liaise with stakeholders and attend client meetings and technical forums.
- Strong understanding of cloud security best practices e.g. Information Security Manual (ISM) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Knowledge and experience with Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, Helm, Keycloak, GPU accelerated workloads.
- Knowledge and experience integrating Kubernetes clusters with VMWare vSphere, Infoblox, F5 BIG-IP, Dell EMC Isilon, IBM QRadar.
- Knowledge experience with VMWare vSphere, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization.
- Experience with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, Satellite, Nagios, and Identity Manager.
- SOE/MOE Creation, Maintenance and Deployment, including security updates and patching for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Experience with Red Hat Ansible automation, Satellite, Nagios, and Identity Manager.
- Proven experience creating detailed technical documentation (as-built documents, operational handovers, Standard Operating Procedures)
- Red Hat qualifications and/or industry certifications are preferred but not mandatory.
- Active Directory and integration with Microsoft services.
- Advanced scripting (PowerShell/Bash/Python)
- Essential 8 security software and policy implementation.
Additional Information
- National or International travel may be required.
- There is an opportunity for the role to be based in Canberra, however remote working arrangements or the opportunity to work from another AFP office in Australia will be considered.
