What is the role?
Do you want to contribute to the development of policies that shape the national security of Australia? Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Policy Officer - Budget Policy in the Strategy and Performance Office (SPO). SPO is responsible for setting the strategic priorities and direction of the AFP, and identifying and driving performance improvement.
The Budget Policy Team seeks to secure favourable funding outcomes for the AFP that ensure our agency is adequately resourced to undertake its critical domestic and international policing operations. We engage with internal AFP and external stakeholders on Commonwealth Budget matters relating to the combatting of various crime types, including terrorism, money laundering, people smuggling, drug trafficking and hatecrimes. We lead the development of policy proposals and provide strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders to inform decision making on these matters.
As a Policy Officer in the AFP, you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
As a Policy Officer, you will support the team to:
- prepare strategic advice, briefs and new policy proposals that are cognisant of operational drivers and Government and AFP priorities;
- communicate effectively, including by distilling key issues and negotiating innovative and practical solutions to complex problems;
- maintain collaborative relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders;
- manage and balance competing priorities; and
- promote better organizational understanding of Government and Commonwealth Budget processes.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Strong writing, strategic thinking, judgement, prioritisation and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Willingness to contribute to a supportive and high performing team.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Knowledge of, and experience with, Government and Budget processes, new policy proposals, and executive and ministerial briefing.
