Role Summary
Specialist Operations (SO) Maritime divers, provide a specialist underwater maritime capability in support of AFP Operations in the ACT, domestically and internationally, including maintaining a community policing presence within the waters of the ACT.
The role is based in the ACT and members must be ACT Geographically based to undertake the role. The role is that of a part-time team member. All applicants must be either band 2-5 or band 6-7. The ROI is open to all sworn members (either Police or PSO).
On receipt of your ROI, you will be contacted by members of the Dive Team. At this time you will be given opportunities to engage with the team as to your suitability and also given access to SHIELD staff to ensure your physical and mental suitability for the role.
A Selection Program may be utilised to rank all suitable candidates for placement on a Commercial Dive Program.
The Basic Dive course is a Nationally accredited program/Commercial qualification. The program will be delivered by an external provider and it will be delivered interstate. The program runs for 8 weeks, with no opportunity to exit and re-enter.
Course dates have not been finalised, but will be organized in consultation with external providers, and release from business areas will be sought through appropriate WMC.
Role Responsibilties
This role may involve:
- Search, rescue and recovery of persons or property above and below the water;
- Dive equipment inspection and maintenance;
- Management of dive team members in accordance with AS2299;
- Diver training and management of qualifications;
- Swift water rescue;
- Vessel operations;
- Research and development, appraisal and recommendation of dive equipment and vessels;
- Vessel maintenance, survey and in-service management;
- Stakeholder liaison; and
- Advice and briefings on the functions of the SO Maritime Divers.
The SO Maritime Dive Team maintains specialist skills which can be utilised in a range of operational environments. This work includes:
- Contributing to effective achievement of business area outputs in accordance with the strategic direction of the AFP;
- Assessing available information or evidence and determine appropriate law enforcement response;
- Maintenance of ongoing training and revalidation requirements for specialist skills;
- Attending court and giving evidence as required;
- Maintenance of high levels of fitness and proficiency in identified specialist skills
- Deployment at short notice, which includes compliance with identified deployment gateways including psychological, medical and integrity processes
- Ability to work effectively as a team in often adverse conditions
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with key external agencies
- Thorough understanding and ability to apply the Incident Command and Control Structure across different Maritime disciplines and operational responses.
Desirable Skills
Essential Requirements
- Use of Force Qualified;
- An ability to maintain the Physical Competency Assessment (PCA) standards in line with established SO Maritime requirements;
- Ability to deploy both nationally and internationally at short notice, including the maintenance of the relevant gateway clearances required for deployment;
- Ability to work various shifts as required including on-call.
- NV1 security clearance or ability to obtain one;
- Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS) Level one and two commercial dive qualifications or ability to obtain;
- Contemporary policing/protective services experience;
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- ADAS Dive Supervisor qualified;
- Current level 1 or equivalent Certificate two in Maritime Operations (Coxswain)
- Heavy vehicle drivers licence;
- In excess of 100 hours of night vessel operations;
- In excess of 100 hours of open water vessel operations;
- Certificate IV in workplace assessment and training.
