What is the role?

AFP Cyber Command’s primary responsibility is to investigate computer related crimes under the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995 against Commonwealth government, critical infrastructure and systems of national significance. Our mission is to make Australia a hostile environment for cybercrime.

We employ technical officers to provide highly technical and sound advice on computer exploitation events, overt and covert intelligence collections and lead development of new collection and analysis techniques.

We have 5 key focus areas for combatting cybercrime:

  • Growing People and Capabilities
  • High Impact Commonwealth Cybercrime Investigations
  • National Coordination
  • Disruption
  • Cybercrime Prevention and Support

By joining Cyber Command you will work alongside software developers, technical analysts, intelligence analysts and police (sworn) investigators dedicated to the identification, prevention and disruption of cybercriminals. You will use cutting-edge technology, work within a collaborative team environment and help develop innovative strategies and technologies as well as support operational activity.

What will you do?

The role of the Technical Officer is to support the operational functions of Cybercrime Operations Teams. You will provide technical solutions to challenges encountered during the investigative process, map out criminal infrastructure, analyse malicious toolsets and participate in Cybercrime search warrants. Other activities include assisting with the digital forensic analysis of electronic devices and support investigation attribution activities. You will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments.

This is not a policing role, and does not require the use of police powers. The role will include a variety of technical tasks, such as:
