What is the role?

Digital Surveillance Collection (DSC) develops and operates a wide range of lawful covert surveillance capabilities in support of the AFP’s operational requirements, including telecommunications interception, surveillance devices, collection under computer access warrant, and collection from open sources. 

 

Our engineering teams manage the collection, ingestion and AI/ML enrichment of structured and unstructured data from diverse sources into analytics platforms, dashboards, reporting tools and operation systems ensuring end-users have access to timely, accurate and actionable insights in support of AFP investigations and intelligence analysis.

 

The Senior Product Manager is responsible for identifying customer needs and business objectives that a technology product will fulfill, and managing the delivery of technical solutions through close collaboration with engineering, infrastructure, governance, and compliance teams. This role involves defining and prioritising product deliverables, translating customer requirements into actionable insights, and bringing the product vision to life through superior problem-solving ability, expertise in product management, and a working technical knowledge of AI/ML and its application into usable capabilities. The Senior Product Manager acts a key liaison between stakeholders, ensuring alignment between business goals, user experience and technical feasibility.

What will you do?

As a Senior Product Manager, you will work individually and as part of a team. Your responsibilities will include:

 

Customer and Business Needs

  • Work closely with business stakeholders to understand strategic objectives and translate them into product goals
  • Conduct user research, feedback sessions and data analysis to identify customer needs, pain points and opportunities
  • Define and document clear product requirements, ensuring alignment with business objectives

 

Product Roadmap and Prioritisation

  • Develop and maintain product roadmaps based on business priorities, user needs and technical feasibility
  • Define and prioritise features, ensuring that the highest value items are delivered first
  • Participate in Scrum Planning and Sprints, collaborating with development teams to assist in refining and estimating tasks
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, competing products and industry partner products to inform strategic decisions and ensure the AFP products remain competitive and aligned with user needs.

 

Collaboration and Communication

  • Act as the primary point of contact between business stakeholders and technical teams
  • Act as the primary point of contact between external stakeholders and vendors to ensure that AFP requirements are clearly understood and effectively prioritised within the vendor’s roadmap
  • Facilitate communication between customer, designers, developers and leadership to ensure seamless product execution
  • Provide regular updates on product progress, challenges, achievements, product performance, new developments and customer impact to leadership and key stakeholders
  • Gather & incorporate feedback from customers/users/stakeholders to continuously improve the product

 

Technical Knowledge and Expertise

  • Draw upon your technical expertise and the expertise of others to design and deliver solutions that make use of appropriate technologies in accordance with governance, cyber security, and ethical requirements
  • Act as an effective translator between specialist technical teams and AFP operational members
  • Develop junior staff through mentoring, sharing technical knowledge, and supporting members on product management career pathways

 

Delivery and Execution

  • Work with development teams using Agile methodologies to oversee product developments and iteration
  • Define success metrics and track key performance indictors (KPIs) to measure the product’s impact and success
  • Report on delivery of product milestones, blockers and external dependencies as needed
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy, security and ethical AI/ML guidelines, including engagement with internal AI/ML approval processes
  • Create, review and update Better Practice Guides (BPGs), policies and procedures

Essential Requirements

 

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Excellent communication & stakeholder engagement skills
  • Industry certifications or demonstrated expertise in product management, business analysis or a related field
  • Industry certifications or demonstrated expertise in Agile methodologies and working with software development and system integration teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance technical constraints with business priorities, informed both by your own technical expertise and the advice of others
  • Experience with product roadmap development and task management tools (e.g. Gitlab, Jira)
  • Expertise relevant to the development and implementation of AI/ML or data analytics services
  • Demonstrated ability to influence the product team by effectively communicating user needs, business priorities, and strategic insights to drive alignment and informed decision-making.
  • Ability to analyse data and customer feedback to drive decision-making
  • An ability to work in a complex, dynamic and sensitive environment
