What is the role?

Do you want to contribute to the development of policies that shape the national security of Australia? Applications are sought for suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Senior Team Leader Budget Policy in the Strategy and Performance Office (SPO). SPO is responsible for setting the strategic priorities and direction of the AFP, and identifying and driving performance improvement. 

 

The Budget Policy Team seeks to secure favourable funding outcomes for the AFP that ensure our agency is adequately resourced to undertake its critical domestic and international policing operations. We engage with internal AFP and external stakeholders on Commonwealth Budget matters relating to the combatting of various crime types, including terrorism, money laundering, people smuggling, drug trafficking and hatecrimes. We lead the development of policy proposals and provide strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders to inform decision making on these matters.   

 

As a Senior Team Leader in the AFP you will play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

 

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments.

What will you do?

As a Band 8 Senior Team Leader, you will:

 

  • manage and guide the team to provide strategic advice that is cognisant of operational drivers and Government and AFP priorities; 
  • balance competing priorities, including the development of briefs and new policy proposals;
  • establish and maintain collaborative relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders;
  • communicate effectively, including by distilling key issues and negotiating innovative and practical solutions to complex problems;
  • drive the promotion of better organisational understanding of Government and Commonwealth Budget processes; and
  • promote change within the agency and team, including through the improvement of systems and processes. 

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience in leading and managing a team to provide strategic policy advice, and/or experience with Government and Budget processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to: lead, model and enable a positive and inclusive culture; support the professional development of yourself and team members; and foster continuous improvement of your team and broader organisational practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a fast paced and dynamic environment, leveraging strong prioritisation skills and modelling enthusiasm and resilience in responding to uncertainty and change.
  • Demonstrated high-level communication and collaboration skills in an environment that has multiple internal and external stakeholders
