What is the role?

An exciting opportunity is available for experienced and dynamic individuals to join the AFP in a key strategic role responsible for the development and delivery of strategic advice on key national security matters. We are seeking applications from suitably qualified individuals wishing to be considered for the role of Senior Team Member – Special Investigations Strategy & Coordination Team.
Special Investigations (SI) is responsible for undertaking complex and protracted national security investigations across a variety of crime types including espionage, foreign interference, electoral integrity, information secrecy and war crimes.
The SI Strategy and Coordination Team (SISC) team provides high-level, timely and strategic policy advice and administrative operational support to investigators, the AFP Executive, and broader government regarding these crime types. The SISC team also provides secretariat support to two AFP senior executive Boards.
The SISC team works closely with teams within the Counter Terrorism and Special Investigations Command and across the AFP such as ministerial, legislative reform, external forums and offices of the AFP Senior Executive.
What will you do?
SISC team is seeking two candidates with demonstrated experience working collaboratively in a team, good analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of an agency.
The two Senior Team Member positions have varying but overlapping responsibilities, with each responsible for leading one of the following:
- Providing strategic advice and analysis on complex legislative and policy issues relating to national security and related crime types, as well as developing strong advice on law enforcement perspectives to the AFP Executive, government and other agencies.
- Leading the successful delivery of secretariat support for Senior Executive, as well as leading and implementing SI Command strategic and capability projects, including evaluating progress against strategic reviews, governance, strategic communications and security awareness.
Senior Team Members are responsible for guiding, mentoring and supporting team members to deliver team tasks and projects. Working together as a team, SISC is responsible for:
- Advising AFP executive on key policy and management issues, including in the context of national and inter-agency meetings, and presentations.
- Researching, analysing and formulating Command positions to existing and emerging national security policy and legislative issues.
- Responses to a variety reviews and inquiries, including cabinet submissions, parliamentary committees and submissions, responses to questions on notice and government responses to inquiries.
- High level secretariat support to AFP Senior Executive.
- Operational reporting for SI Command, including Weekly Executive Briefings, operational statistics reporting, responses to media, ministerial and FOI enquiries.
- Contributing to Whole of Government and interagency policy work in the Special Investigations context, including effective engagement with relevant areas of the AFP and external stakeholders to address complex policy and law enforcement issues, particularly relating to espionage and foreign interference.
- Supporting capability, project and research work to relevant to SI Command.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Resilience and an ability to work to a high standard in a complex and dynamic environment.
- Experience in at a minimum one of the following:
- Government processes and engagement, legislative reform or demonstrated ability to translate and interpret technical legal frameworks and legislation into succinct advice to different audiences.
- Secretariat support, analysis, research, project management skills and strong administration, organisational and communication skills
- Demonstrated experience supporting team leadership and team members, working harmoniously and collaboratively within a small team with a positive attitude and initiative.
- An ability to prioritise tasks, take initiative and work autonomously when required.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- TSPA clearance, or the ability to obtain one.
- Demonstrated stakeholder management skills and the ability to form productive working relationships as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and high-level writing and editing skills.
