If so, an exciting opportunity is available for experienced and dynamic leaders to join the AFP in a key strategic role responsible for supporting the development and strengthening of AFP’s Risk & Governance frameworks.


We are looking for experienced Team Leaders wishing to be considered for positions in Internal Audit and Risk and Assurance roles in the Australian Federal Police’s (AFP) Strategy and Performance Office (SPO), at the Band 7 (Team Leader) level. This is a Canberra-based role.


We are looking for enthusiastic and positive team leaders who have:

As a Team Leader you also play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?


The Internal Audit team provides independent assurance to the Commissioner that the AFP’s controls are designed to manage current and emerging organisational risks. The team delivers in-house audits and works in collaboration with a panel outsourced service providers. Reporting to the Coordinator Internal Audit, the Team Leader Internal Audit’s responsibilities include:


  • Contributing to development of the annual Internal Audit Work Program of operational, performance and compliance audits and health checks.
  • Managing a team of auditors to deliver internal audits and management-initiated reviews, including planning, fieldwork and reporting of these reviews.
  • Assisting with managing outsourced service providers and contributing to delivery of co-sourced audits.
  • Leading stakeholder consultation, research, and analysis of data and information to identify opportunities for innovative practices, efficiencies and strengthening governance, risk management and controls.
  • Assisting with preparation of written communication on internal audits and other advice to the AFP Audit and Risk Committee.
  • Liaising with Business Areas on audit requests, including the implementation of recommendations.
  • Maintaining strong working relationships with other assurance functions within the AFP and assisting with maturing the Internal Audit function.
  • Developing Internal Audit team members, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture.

The AFP’s Risk and Assurance team is focused on driving a better understanding of a modern risk framework and how it is applied to the fast-paced AFP environment. The Risk and Assurance Team Leader is responsible for:


  • Managing maintenance and advancement of the AFP Risk Management Framework.
  • Advising on emerging issues affecting the AFP’s risks and strategic direction.
  • Implementing and maintaining an enterprise risk management program of work including risk reviews and reports, facilitating understanding of risk exposures across the organisation and engaging with stakeholders to promote risk awareness.
  • Providing tailored, persuasive, trusted advice on risk and assurance to senior stakeholders and frontline clients, including delivery of workshops / presentations / training.
  • Effectively building and maintaining team capability, while managing day-to-day performance of team members.
  • Researching and identifying opportunities for improvement, utilising innovative concepts and methodologies to enhance business outcomes and facilitate change.
  • Preparing business and enterprise risk reports, including Board and Committee papers, briefings, and reports on governance activities and initiatives.

Essential Requirements


Team Leader Internal Audit


  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Has contemporary knowledge and experience in internal audit, risk management, assurance, or other similar roles.
  • Qualifications in relevant field.


Team Leader Risk and Assurance


  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Strong oral, written and leadership skills consistent with the work level standards.
  • Has contemporary knowledge and experience in Enterprise Risk Frameworks and Strategic Risk management.
  • Qualification in Diploma Risk Management or Diploma Security Risk Management or similar.
  • Qualification in Leadership Management or similar.

Desirable Requirements


Team Leader Internal Audit


  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Experience in managing small to medium size projects.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information, clearly communicate findings, and formulate strategic recommendations.
  • Contract management skills to assist in managing the Internal Audit panel of providers.
  • A willingness to travel.


Team Leader Risk and Assurance


  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • An understanding of the role of the AFP in the Australian and international policing context, and broader law enforcement and national security environment.
  • Experience in managing small to medium size projects.
  • Project management qualifications or experience.
  • Ability to critically review issues and provide strategic recommendation to address identified risks.
