AFP Forensics comprises a large number of specialist services and capabilities at the AFP’s state-of-the-art Forensics Facility in Canberra and within the AFP’s regional commands across Australia.

Digital forensics examiners

Digital forensics examiners (DFEs) are specialists within the AFP Forensics Command. Often classified as problem solvers who employ analytical, technical and logical thinking, DFEs access, assess, secure, process, exploit, analyse and report on all forms of electronic data that may assist an AFP investigator. Critical to this work is ensuring compliance with the various legislative and legal requirements that govern how we operate whilst remaining flexible, adaptable and responsive to operating in any manner of physical environments and locations in often stressful conditions.    

DFEs are also required to assist and/or lead capability (tools, programs, governance, processes, training) development, delivery and evolution to ensure that the AFP is able to operate effectively in a continually evolving technological landscape.

What we do

• Support the frontline and maximise the AFP’s operational impact by delivering a broad range of forensic capability and technical knowledge
• Provide forensic capabilities or strategically maintain and evolve the AFP’s forensics specialisations to meet emerging threats and deliver results
• Work alongside domestic and international partners, championing collaboration, ideas and diversity of thought.
