I thoroughly enjoy the challenges that come with our ever-developing crime type. It’s particularly rewarding when we are able to break down the barriers of anonymity, working towards attributing the identified criminal activity to an individual or group. I also like the idea that we can take our fight offshore and disrupt criminals who think they are above Australian law.

The Work

As a technical officer/analyst in Cybercrime, you will provide expert technical support, advice and capability development to investigations and intelligence processes

What we do

  • Cybercrime’s role is to:
  • Investigate cybercrime against the Australian Government, critical infrastructure and systems of national significance, or those that impact on the whole of the Australian economy
  • Disrupt the efforts of cyber criminals using the dark web and anonymising technologies to evade detection
  • Connect domestic and international law-enforcement agencies to counter cybercrime 
  • Work with Australian Government agencies and law enforcement on joint prevention awareness and education media campaigns.

How to join

How to join

There are standard steps to joining any investigative area in the AFP. 

  1. Train as a police officer recruit 
  2. Complete six months’ probation  
  3. Successfully complete an on-the-job workbook (usually completed over a 12-month period) 
  4. Continue to gain policing experience and apply for an investigative position when advertised.
